Description

The aim of this paper is to define the Wasserstein space, prove its basic properties and illustrate its usefulness with examples.

Wasserstein space is a key concept in optimal transport theory. The initial problem of this theory is to minimize the cost of transporting goods between sources and customers. This problem and its generalization have surprisingly wide applications in physics, statistics or partial differential equations. The topicality of the topic is illustrated by the fact that the French mathematician Cédric Villani was awarded the Fields Medal in 2010 for his work on it.
